What better way to celebrate our seniors than with National Senior Health and Fitness Day, which is on Wednesday, May 25th this year. This day is dedicated to promoting the importance of regular physical activity and creating awareness of health-related issues in older adults. Even though this is just one day in May, it’s a great opportunity to look at ways to stay active and help our seniors thrive.
5 Ways to Celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day:
- Complete a Fitness Test and/or Health Screening. It is important to have a fitness assessment and/or health screening done at least twice per year as a proactive measure. Knowing how physically fit you are is a vital tool to obtaining optimal health and wellness. Participating in a health screening keeps you in the know of what’s going on with your body and offers a chance to take preventative measures or actions.
- Brain Games. Mental health is just as important as physical health, if not more. Cognitive function and mental health tend to decline as we age. Just as you would lift weights to strengthen your muscles, you should do mentally stimulating activities to strengthen your mind. Adding crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or other brain games into your routine can help with cognitive function.
- Try an Exercise Class. Physical activity is essential for your overall health and wellness. Regular physical activity can prevent significant health issues. Participating in exercise classes also adds a social element to your exercise routine. As social creatures, this is extremely important. Find something that interests you, like a dance or meditation class, and give it a try!
- Visit a Loved One. Visit a grandparent, family member, or loved one. Getting out and spending time with someone has both physical and mental benefits. It can make you and the person you are visiting feel good!
- Thrive! Live life to its greatest potential and THRIVE! Try incorporating the social, environmental, spiritual, emotional, physical, vocational, and intellectual wellness into your daily life and experience an engaging life.
