Did you know your spine is the backbone of your health? It serves as the foundation for your central nervous system. It also plays a critical function of every other system – circulatory, respiratory, immunity, and hormones. Good posture is about more than standing up straight so you can look your best; it is an important part of your long-term health. Making sure that you hold your body the right way, whether you are moving or still, can prevent pain, injuries, and other health problems.
Strike a Pose!
Here is a challenge for you to try with your coworkers. When you are sitting at a desk, using a handheld device, or just standing upright, have someone take a picture of your posture. What are you seeing in your pose? Slouching in your chair, sticking your rear out, standing with a flat back, leaning on one leg, hunched back with a “tech neck,” poking your chin out, rounded shoulders, cradling your phone with your neck?

The positions you may see in the photos are the starting points for impairing your health. The good news – simple exercises can help you regain alignment for both your static and dynamic posture.
Improving Your Health Through Posture
Be mindful of your posture during everyday activities – using a computer or handheld device, walking, and standing. Your office chair needs to be aligned to support a natural, healthy spinal position. Remember to take breaks and walk around to promote circulation and flexibility.
Stay active. Any kind of exercise may help improve your posture, but certain types of exercises can be especially helpful. Select the ones which are designed to strengthen your core (muscles around your back, abdomen, and pelvis).
Maintain a healthy weight.
Wear comfortable, supportive shoes.
Make sure work surfaces are at a comfortable height for you, whether you’re sitting in front of a television, computer, or doing your regular routine activities.
With practice, you can improve your posture; you will look and feel better and enjoy better health!
