Goal: To stretch the latissimus dorsi muscle, quadratus lumborum and other para spinal muscles that aid in lateral flexion of the trunk. Make overhead reaching easier.

Benefits: Tight muscles that run along the sides of our bodies can lead to back and shoulder pain. This is a great stretch for the shoulders, for which it benefits overhead reaching.  Lateral bending also helps stretch the muscles of the lower back reducing back tightness.  If you are somebody that experiences disc issues, spinal stenosis or even facet irritation; this exercise is much safer being performed with up right posture and gentle pain free movement.

To do: Sit tall on a chair or edge of bed.  Gently begin to bend at your waist to the right of your body.  If you do not have shoulder problems, proceed to reach overhead with your left arm to feel a nice stretch on the entire left side of your body. Repeat on the other side. This stretch is best between 5 to 10 repetitions both morning and evening.

This information is not intended to take the place of any advice given to you by your healthcare professional(s). If you experience chronic lower back pain or other physical pain, please consult with you physician or medical professional.  There may be other underlying issues that should be evaluated prior to exercise.

A Day in the Life of Henry: A Dementia Experience https://portal.fprehab.com/2018/10/09/a-day-in-the-life-of-henry-a-dementia-experience/ https://portal.fprehab.com/2018/10/09/a-day-in-the-life-of-henry-a-dementia-experience/#respond Tue, 09 Oct 2018 10:10:36 +0000 https://portal.fprehab.com/?p=217249 McKnight’s Long Term Care News just release a wonderful article on a free VR dementia course geared to promote empathy.

Relias has released “A Day in the Life of Henry: A Dementia Experience” (https://preview.relias.com/Library/Demo/2017/VR/story_html5.html?lms=1)

to anyone free of charge, the company announced last week. While the course is designed to be taken in a virtual reality environment, caregivers also can take it on a computer desktop version. Those interested in the VR version can buy a VR view via Google Cardboard.for under $10.

“The overwhelming feedback was it had direct emotional impact to the point of tears for some folks,” Relias Chief Marketing Officer Alex Osadzinski told McKnight’s. “The goal is to see the world through the eyes of Henry. You are trying to get through the day with your desires being met. It shows you how folks aren’t being mean or evil. It really hits you right in the gut.”

In one example, Henry is trying to do a jigsaw puzzle, but someone places a tray in front of him and he loses his puzzle piece. Such everyday frustrations for those with dementia give caregivers a new perspective, Osadzinski says.

The course, designed by Jennifer Burks, RN, MSN, and Jennifer Moore, RN-BC, DNS-CT, CDP, offers CE credit for professional caregivers, but making it free makes it an option for those who want to better understand dementia. That decision was “a spur-of-the-moment thing,” Osadzinski said, geared toward helping the profession and boosting empathy.  “It might help some people and it can begin to socialize the idea of immersive content,” he said.
